Concrete which is substantially pressed at the time of manufacturing to strengthen the against tensile forces which will be applied at the time of service this type of concrete which is pressure during production it's called as prestressed concrete.
Tendons are the material which are used to produce compression, it is manufactured by by but tensioning of high-strength tendons and it is located with in or adjacent to concrete.
Advantages of prestressed concrete:
High tension steel, carbon fibre are the material which are most commonly used for making tendons which consist of single wire, multi wire strand or threaded bars.
One of the key advantage of prestressed concrete is when the initial compressive force is applied the resulting material has the characteristics of high strength when subjected to any outer force and ductile characteristics is covered by high strength Steel subject to tension forces. So as compared to other concrete it can improve structural capacity and serviceability in many situation.
The internal stresses in the prestressed concrete needs to be presented in planned manner so that the imposed load which should be resulted in counteracted the desired degree of concrete.
Application:
Prestressed concrete can be widely used in the civil structure and buildings because of its improved performance it can be used in the longer span, material saving, reduce the structural thickness with respect to other reinforced concrete.
Some of the common examples of uses of prestressed concrete are residential slabs, high rise buildings, bridges and dams, silos and tanks, industrial pavements and foundation system.
Late 19th century was the period where prestressed concrete has discovered above pre tensioning and it includes post tensioning which occurs after the concrete is cast.
Classification of prestressed concrete:
Depending upon stressing methods it can be classified as either mono strand in which the strand or wire individually stressed and in multi strand all the strength or wires in a tendons we are stressed at the same time.
Tendons which are used in the concreting can be located within the concrete volume or it can be fully outside of the the concrete volume.
